KARL JOHNSON – ‘CLAUDE’
Although Claude doesn’t utter any dialogue during the film, the story required an actor with a great ability to convey the complex emotions of a man at the end of his life, faced with the mortality of his one time partner and friend without letting it spill over into a mawkish or cliched performance. With the deftest of touches Karl brought Claude to life on the screen, in a moment switching from mischievous satisfaction to crushing sadness.
Whilst Benny only appears in the film ‘posthumously’ in photos and newspaper clippings, it was essential to find the right actor to portray this Music Hall star. Amy had worked with Jack Warner on many productions when she was an AD, and had even discussed the project with Jack back when it was first being written. When the time came to make the film, some years later, Amy had no hesitation in approaching Jack to appear in the film.
